For as long as I can remember, I have been very conscious of my weight. I have always been VERY aware of what foods go in my body, even though I've been overweight most of my life. When I was 13 years-old I weighed over 140 pounds. I knew that I was eating too much and the wrong things, but I felt that it was the only decadent pleasure afforded me in my life. I also didn't realize I could control my weight.
The last ten years have served as a sort of 'coming out' for those who feel that they are defined, at least to some extent, by their eating disorder. Now, years later, I have come to the conclusion that there is something new being born as we speak in the 21st century.
There are hundreds of diets and nutritionist plans to aid people, especially the wealthy in reducing excess weight. Most of these plans use what we read every day on these sites. A basic mathematic truth. Consume less and exercise more. Many of these diets are challenging, much like the proana movement, the concept of anorexia. There are in-fact health spas around the country who recommend a diet of 800 calories a day. Now, there is not enough research to establish whether this practice is healthy, but, at the same time, there is not enough research to dispute it either.
Most people on this site are aware that you must keep your metabolism moving, via a few calories here and there and also exercise. At what point does ana become an ED and what time does it remain simply a restrictive diet? These are questions we are probing today.
As individuals who are alive in the 21st century, we are part of this birth of challenging ideas and coming up with definition. But enough about the politics.
I'm struggling with my own issues of beauty, perfection, diets, and obsession. Let's see where we go.
